About Notion

Notion is where teams and agents think together. It’s the collaborative AI workspace, built on your company context, where you can build and orchestrate agents right alongside your team’s projects, meetings, and connected apps. The largest and fastest-growing software companies in the world run on Notion. Historically known for a massive Product-Led Growth (PLG) motion fueled by organic consumer love, Notion recently recognized the need to scale an enterprise-ready, proactive outbound culture.

Today, under a company-wide initiative spanning from the C-suite to revenue operations, the company is equipping its BDR and commercial Account Executive teams to execute a highly efficient Sales-Led Growth (SLG) motion.

The "PLG Trap," a Lack of Time, and a Black Box Sales Floor

Transitioning from a self-serve PLG culture to a proactive outbound engine is notoriously difficult. For years, Notion’s pipeline targets were met largely through tremendous brand awareness, inbound interest, and passive channels like email and LinkedIn DMs. Cold calling was deeply underutilized.

"We had historically been really blessed by reaching a lot of our pipeline and sales targets with standard channels," explains Shawn Noronha, a Sales Development Leader at Notion. "Calling at scale wasn't something we did, and a cold call meeting booked was a real rarity—maybe one a month, or one every two weeks."

"Starting off at Notion, people did not want to dial," agrees Bill Woodward, a BDR. "There was very much no dialing culture whatsoever."

The team's legacy dialing setup was slow, manual, and widely considered a "slog," keeping BDR volume artificially low. Reps were expected to make only about 250 calls a week, but they were averaging about 25 dials a day.

For the Account Executive team, the pipeline volume problem was compounded by a severe lack of time. AEs were tasked with building their own pipeline from scratch while also managing the full sales cycle and handling renewals.

"Our best sellers knew calling was important, but they didn't have five or six hours a day to set aside," says AE Leader Spencer Gabriel. To hit ambitious enterprise revenue goals, Notion needed a solution that would compress time while maximizing output.

"Traditional tools were just a black box," Shawn admits. "I didn't know what my reps were saying live. Trying to get some level of visibility was a nightmare."

Gamifying Outbound and Leveraging AI with Nooks

To fix their pipeline generation, drive a massive shift in meeting volume, and open the "black box" of outbound on their sales floor, Notion launched a formal trial with Nooks. As an AI-native company themselves, Notion intentionally sought out a partner that moved fast and integrated AI meaningfully.

Pipeline Power Ups & The Virtual Sales Floor Nooks helped to completely transform the dialing experience. Instead of making cold calls in isolation, Notion implemented "Pipeline Power Ups" on Tuesdays and Thursdays, bringing the whole sales org together to dial in a shared Nooks Virtual Sales Floor.

  • Organic Culture: The Virtual Sales Floor made outbound a fun, gamified, and social event. "I watched this organic effect of reps getting excited for call blitzes," Shawn shares. "It was magic to watch as a manager."
  • High Energy: "The floor is buzzing," adds Johnny DeFazio, Head of BDR North America, noting that it sounds like an older time sales org where people are talking live on the phone.
  • Live Coaching: Managers hop into the platform to listen to live calls and pull reps into private breakout rooms for immediate, actionable feedback. "Being able to work on the rep live is a massive confidence booster," says Shawn. "It makes them feel like they are sharpening the sword."

Dynamic Battlecards for Complex PLG Upgrades Because Notion sells to numerous personas—from Engineering and Product (EPD) to RevOps and HR—reps initially worried about knowing exactly what to say. Nooks automatically surfaces dynamic battlecards based on who connects. When a prospect mentions a competitor, plug-and-play messaging instantly pops up, preventing the rep from being unready.

This feature also empowers high-volume "intel gathering" calls. "It used to be hard to just email a power user and say 'How can I get in touch with you?'" explains Shawn. "But cold calling with Nooks is incredibly efficient for intel gathering. We find out they are using Notion to one-nth of its capability, which allows us to build a stronger POV and launch $20K to $50K deals."

AI Smart Lists and Roleplay Bots To ensure high efficiency, reps leverage Nooks’ AI Smart Lists to instantly pull up prospects who haven't picked up recently, generating lists of 200 viable targets without manual filtering. Additionally, the team uses Nooks' AI Roleplay Bots to safely practice objection handling before dialing live.

150 Meetings, Smashed Quotas, and a Transformed Culture

By empowering their BDRs and AEs with a parallel dialer, dynamic AI battlecards, and an engaging Virtual Sales Floor, the sheer volume of pipeline generated skyrocketed.

"Over the three-week pilot, we booked 150 meetings," Shawn reveals. "Going from a handful of booked meetings to 150, with almost everyone across the POC contributing, was insane to watch. We went from booking maybe one cold call meeting a month to reps booking five or six meetings per week."

The efficiency gains saved entire quarters for reps. During the final week of Q4, BDR Jackson Walker was behind on quota. Using Nooks, he was able to massively increase his connections, closing a third of his entire number in the last week of the quarter. "Before we were using Nooks, it felt like booking a meeting was like rubbing two sticks together to make a fire," Jackson notes. "With Nooks, it's like having a Zippo, or a flamethrower."

The impact on the Account Executive team was equally massive. AEs who were previously the biggest skeptics of the legacy dialer jumped to the top of the leaderboard, driving a 250% increase in AE dial volume.

Key Results Box:

  • Instant Pipeline: Booked 150 meetings in the 3-week pilot.
  • 10x - 20x Volume Shift: Reps increased from 1-2 meetings a month to 5-6 meetings a week.
  • Unprecedented AE Efficiency: AEs can now generate 3 to 4 meetings in just 45 minutes of dialing, making outbound highly approachable.
  • Massive Activity Lift: BDR dial volume jumped 119%, and AE dial volume skyrocketed 250%.
  • Active Control Over Pipeline: Reps now feel empowered to take ownership of their pipeline, rather than waiting for passive email replies.

Ultimately, Nooks allowed Notion to establish a true outbound culture, giving their revenue teams the speed, enablement, and visibility needed to execute an enterprise sales motion.

"We can build our own pipeline now and not feel like we can only get it off of Outreach sequences, which I think we all know is probably a dying art," concludes Spencer Gabriel.

"Going from a handful of cold call booked meetings to 150 over a three-week pilot was insane to watch. The reporting and visibility piece alone is worth the selling price. If we had to go back to manual dialing, it would be a nightmare. Reps would revolt, and I couldn't imagine going back."
